The Barrel you are after should suit the criteria that you work within. Evaluate the checklist below for the essential features in your Barrel selection that you should tick off before you buy: –

Barrel Checklist:

  1. The Barrel and mixing capacity should closely suit your loading & mixing environment – it should be capable of
    standing up to the rigors of the average meterage that you will push through week after week.
  2. The construction type should be of high-quality steel (Rheemalloy) OR Hardox – dependent on the work
    environment it operates in and the life of the barrel that you require.
  3. What is the condition of the Centre-band – is it wear-resistant?
  4. Does the Barrel come with mesh topping on the Blades – with a light concrete filling over time and washouts?
    Mesh gives extra foundation to the mixing blade and acts to stop the blades splitting.
  5. Are the Blades formed in one or press-formed for extra strength; or do they require flights? For press-formed
    blades you save any re-flighting cost and inconvenience – which you could face every year or two.
  6. Are the welds around the Track Ring of high-quality weld finish – to protect against barrel split issues
  7. Is the Dished End (where the Gearbox connects to the Barrel) reinforced or does it have an internal chamber for
    double re-inforcing that will act against any crushing effect that could compromise the integrity of your Barrel?

Method of Design & Construction

The construction type of your Barrel should be based on an essential design construct through to manufactured Barrel finish that determines the quality of your Barrel and therefore it’s likely life-span. The construction of Barrel cannot be understated.

If a design element in the construction of your Barrel doesn’t incorporate optimal mix uniformity, enabled by blade design and manufactured to meet the Australian Standard AS 1379-1991, then you will be getting a Barrel that doesn’t meet the high standards of design/construction and one that will not give you the guarantee to continue to pump out a long life, especially when under heavy load.
